56.366 - Grandma Always Kicked My Ass at Scrabble
I’m a poor sport when it comes to playing board games. I always lose. Really. My grandmother was always able to pull zillion point scores off the shortest words imaginable and my husband consistently beats me with dumb words like "um." (I still don’t think that’s a word, Robert, even if it’s in the dictionary. We need a better dictionary.)
Anyway, I was going to compose a long-winded essay about what a major influence Cervantes’ Don Quixote had on me…and other books like Lennnox’s Female Quixote and Tenney’s Female Quixotism, but I have to go tilt at windmills….rather, cook dinner.
To make a long story short, "quixotic" is probably the most comprehensively accurate term that could be applied to me–both for good and ill.

Trust me, long words like this aren't worth the effort. Try "um."

My favourite bastardization of Quixote is Quick Oats. You just reminded me that I should finish the damn book—I have the Edith Grossman translation and it's easily the most readable edition I've come across; but still...

if there's one thing i've learnt about scrabble, it's that repeatedly doubling up with two and three letter words earns mega points but there's nothing more satisfying thatn laying all seven letters down in one go! x

I hear you about the board games. I'm an English teacher, so I get MAD when I lose at Scrabble. Maybe I should try "um"...
