Embellish This!

Sewing / Posted on May 27th, 2011

I cut out this skirt one year ago, stuffed it into a ziplock and forgot all about it, until Sew Weekly challenged us to create an embellished garment. I knew that if I actually wanted to complete this challenge, I’d need to keep the garment as simple as possible so I’d actually have time to embroider it. In general, I think simple garments are more ripe for embellishment than fancy ones, anyway. They’re more like blank canvases.

A-line skirt

The skirt is from BurdaStyle 02-2010. The color is not actually as lurid as these photos make it seem. It’s more of a dusty aqua. I made a plain version of this before and got a lot of wear out of it last fall. It’s a great basic.

I wish I could say I designed the embroidery pattern, since I love to doodle, but not this time. I found the “fanciful floral” pattern in A Rainbow of Stitches. If you love needlework, you’d love this book! It’s chock full of great designs.

Very pretty embroidery – and I like the color of the skirt, too.
I really enjoy embroidering, but don’t do it much because, you know, how much in the way of embroidered pillowcases and wallhangings do you need? Putting embroidery on clothing nicely fits the bill for practicality AND art.

So pretty! Really nice embroidery. I love to embroider, especially in the summer, that way I can take sewing with me outdoors! :-)

That’s one of the great things about hand sewing, isn’t it? It’s great to take with you.

Cute! Having the different colors of embroidery on the skirt makes it really versatile for wearing with different colors of tops.
