Happy Birthday, Lewis Carroll!

Accessories January 27th, 2011

In honor of my favorite writer/mathematician/photographer, who was born on this day in 1832, I “made” a necklace.

I put “made” in quotes up there, because it was so easy to assemble that it feels like it made itself. All I did was put one of Home Studio’s fabulous Scrabble tile pendants on a bit of sterling silver chain, attach a clasp and a few beads, and voila! New necklace.

I bought the tile at a local bead shop, but discovered that you can also buy them on etsy. While looking up the company, I discovered their tutorial for creating your own pendants. I really want to try this someday!

Spinning a Yarn

General January 26th, 2011

Is this how I’m going to look some day in the near future (although not quite as cute)?

basket case

I have a feeling all of my hobbies are going to turn me into a basket-case, but right now, I’m enjoying them. Today, I took a drop spindle class and feel positively giddy about the craft. IT’S SO AMAZINGLY FUN. I’m pretty sure the instructor thought I was nuts when I starting giggling as I began plying my yarn. It looks like a wooly candy-cane.

My first yarn

How awesome is that? Well, all right, it’s uneven and made up of various samples (Coopworth, BFL and Finn Top), so it’s not something anyone in their right mind would want to use, but I’m darned proud of it.

I bought enough roving to spin yarn for a cowl. So excited!

Adornments

Accessories January 26th, 2011

If I were a better blogger, I would have written about these as I made them, but I’ve been too excited to put down the beads and wire to type. This is fun, fun, fun. I think I’m really a magpie–I love shiny things.

silver flowers

I strung beads and charms onto memory wire for this pretty choker. I wasn’t sure how comfortable something like this would be to wear, but it turns out to be just fine. In fact, I liked it so much, I made a coordinating set of earrings. I believe the round beads are moss agate–very pretty. They run from a bluish-grey to a dark, forest green.

golden earrings

I’m not as crazy about this batch, partly because I don’t like the look of gold as much, but they were fun to make. Of course, I’ll be wearing the hearts on Valentine’s Day.

charm bracelet

I got on a roll making wire wrapped loops…and this charm bracelet materialized. My daughter refers to it as the “noisy bracelet” since the beads rattle whenever I move my arm.

Granny Square Earrings

These are kind of chintzy and certainly won’t stand up to much abuse, but I just had to try making them. I crocheted the granny squares using 26 gauge dead soft artistic wire. It’s brighter than actual silver and kind of reminds me of soda cans, i.e. not the most elegant metal. Anyway, this project was somewhat challenging. My first attempts were…amusing :) The pendants are some sort of acrylic material (I think) and are lightweight.
