Wardrobe Planning

Knitting, Me-Made-May, Sewing / Posted on May 22nd, 2010

When considering my personal style, mirrors don’t tell the entire story. Only when I study a photograph do I begin to see how things work or fail to work together. Day twenty’s photograph is a prime example of this. I wore outfits similar to this one all winter long. I thought they were fine, but looking at the picture tells me I could do better. I could find something more flattering for my figure–and I believe that outfit could be just as comfortable.

Me-Made-May: Day 20

I love Klaralund (the pullover), but I think the hem falls at the wrong place on me. If it were just a little bit longer, I think it would better camouflage my wide hips. Similarly, I have been wearing many tops with 3/4 length sleeves. I have long arms to begin with, but sleeves like that only serve to make my arms look even longer. Going forward, I’m going to pay more attention to details like that to create more flattering garments.

Day 20 was a bad hair day, too, which probably didn’t influence me positively when evaluating my handmade creations. I may have over-corrected that issue on Day 21. I put my hair up in rag curlers the night before, and voila! Poofy Hair!

Me-Made-May: Day 21

A fancy hairdo required a showy outfit, so I wore my crazy handkerchief-hem tunic. It was a fun fashion day!

I haven’t thought this much about clothes since I was in elementary school and played with my Vivien Leigh paper doll set. While I don’t think I’ll ever be a clothes horse, I’d like to be a little more put together on a daily basis and NOT have to struggle with it. If I’m going to succeed at that, I’m going to have to PLAN.

I’ve been fooling around with a wardrobe storyboard, using Pattern Review’s rules for the 2010 wardrobe contest as a guideline. It seems like it would be easy enough to come up with four tops, four bottoms a “topper” and a free choice garment that all work together, but WOW, it’s challenging. Not only do the colors have to coordinate, sleeves, necklines, and general silhouettes all factor into the final equation.

I’m not really committed to sewing all of this in PR’s contest time frame. I don’t know that I could actually do it. I’ll just have to see how it goes!

You look fabulous on Day 21! (And I love your yoga pants day, what a wonderful way to spend the day:)

I’m very interested in sewing with a little forethought this summer and am totally inspired by your storyboard (your white pants will be fabulous — definitely a leap of faith but so, so elegant). Thanks for sharing!

It’s amazing to see how you actually look every day, when you have to take photo evidence, though we are our own worst critics!
Great idea to storyboard your projects! I made a list of sewing projects I wanted to make this year but have definitely veered off course a bit. It’s a great way to make sure your tops have bottoms to go with, and vice versa!

I love your storyboard – the stripes and buttons are very nautical, but you’ve got a cute pin-upy polka dot blouse, too. Can’t wait to see what garments of it
