One Small Step…

27 April, 2009 | Amy | 4 Comments

I did it! I sewed something for myself that fits.

Vogue 8386

This is Vogue 8386, which is a very popular design on Pattern Review. The good thing about popularity is being able to draw on lots of other people’s wisdom and experience when putting that popular thing together yourself.

For example, the instructions described an extremely convoluted method for assembling the bodice and lining. In reading various reviews, I stumbled across the Slapdash Sewist’s much more elegant method of accomplishing this.

The dress practically sewed itself. You know something’s going well when you don’t have to fight it every step of the way. The fabric behaved itself, my seams matched up without any fuss…it was just fun.

There are only three issues. One, I’m not happy with my hemming job. I tried using a twin needle, which is usually a great way to hem knits. No matter how narrow the space between the needles and how loose my tension, the fabric still tunneled between the rows of stitches. It’s kind of distracting. Next time, I’ll opt to handsew the hem. Unfortunately, I can’t rip and redo this because the fabric doesn’t hold up well to a lot of seam ripping. Don’t ask how I know, lol.

Two, the top center portion of the back gaps a little when I rotate my arms. It’s not a big deal, but were I to do this again, I’d take a wedge out of the back to cinch it up a bit.

Finally, I desperately need a new bra to wear with this. My comfortable bras are all too high cut to wear with a plunging neckline like this. The one I’m wearing in the picture does not fit right and makes me look like I have four breasts instead of just two (which is just not a good look for human females).

Claire’s New Dress

I just finished a cute dress for Claire and she’s delighted with it. That is cause for celebration!

Peasant Dress (Portabello Pixie - Claire)

This dress was made using a Portabellopixie pattern called Claire. How funny is that?

I wanted to make an apron as shown in the pattern pictures, but Claire put her foot down. There was no way she would wear a dress with an apron on it.

Good grief, Mom, what could you have been thinking??

I was thinking it looked cute–and fun to sew, but restrained myself and made the outfit sans apron. I couldn’t resist a little embellishment, though, and made a fabric yo-yo brooch.

You can read my full review of the pattern on Pattern Review.

Confession

I have a confession to make. I am completely obsessed with sewing. So complete is my obsession that I resent having to take out time to do other things like eating and sleeping. I attribute this phase to a “eureka” moment I had recently about getting things to fit me. That was my big stumbling block for so long–and now that it’s gone, I want to sew all the wonderful patterns I’ve got filed away.

I’ve been busy test fitting garments by first pinning together the tissue pattern pieces (often retraced onto separate tissue to keep the original intact) and sometimes sewing up muslins, i.e. test pieces out of cheap fabric. It’s going really well, but I don’t have much to show for it yet.

Folks, I’ve got to air a pet peeve of mine. The term is MUSLIN–ending with an N. Muslin is a type of fabric. Many people seem to confuse this term with MUSLIM, which is a practitioner of a certain religion.

Stepping off my soapbox for the moment…

In the meantime, I’ve stitched up some garments, which required less fitting work than what I hope to make in the future. Here’s the pajama pants I made using the instructions in Heather Ross’ book, Weekend Sewing:

PJ Pants for Sam and Claire

They turned out great and are extremely comfy. I made a pair for myself out of the same fabric as Claire’s. I’m going to make many more of these!

I also stitched up what I’m thinking of as a “lady of leisure uniform.” I really should be sipping (a) martini(s) when dressed up like this:

My Crazy New Outfit

While the design is fairly simple, it was my first time sewing on knit fabric and I’m thrilled to report I got the hang of it. I read Wendy Mullin’s book, Home Stretch, and studied my machine’s manual before I began. I do not have a serger (nor can I afford one right now), but am glad I can do a nice job with these fabrics. I’m planning on sewing some t-shirts for myself and the kids…special t-shirts…fun!

Finally, Robert cleaned out his closet to make room for some new spring clothing he purchased. This made me giddy with excitement–not because we would be getting rid of a pile of stuff that was cluttering up our home–oh no! I was excited because all that fabric could be cut up and used to make something new and fun.

I’m going to use some of the fabrics to make blouses for myself. I’ll use others to make shirts for Sam.
