Horns of a Dilemma

Dilemma

I finished knitting my fair-isle yoke sweater and it has the potential of being my absolute most favorite sweater ever. There’s just one major problem, and, being as knocked up on cold medications as I am, I’m pretty sure I’m in no condition to make a rational decision about how to fix that problem.

The sleeves are two-and-a-half inches too long. That’s a lot. The sleeves don’t just graze my knuckles, they completely blanket them.

Dilemma

As I see it, I have two options.

Option A

Rip out the yoke. Rip out 2.5 inches of each sleeve. Re-knit.

Option B

Cut off sleeves. Rip out 2.5 inches. Graft back together.

In theory, Option B would be a lot less work. I’m worried that my grafting skills are not up to par, and if I frak up the grafting, I’ll need to revert to Option A anyway and have to reknit part of the sleeves. Yuk.

I’m also a little bit disatisfied with how rumpley the lower part of the yoke is. My stranding improved significantly towards the top part of the yoke. If I re-knit it, perhaps the yoke would be more consistent and smooth???

And what will blocking do to the yoke? Will it fix the rumpleyness with which I’m unhappy?

Argh. I’m going back to bed and will deal with this when I’m feeling better. In the meantime, if anyone has suggestions, lay them on me :)

Under the Weather

I am sick, sick sick. And grouchy too. Luckily this cheers me up:

and this too:

My stranding looks a little rumple-y, but I think it will block out all right. It’s been awhile since I’ve worked any fair-isle and my technique is rusty. It’s fun though, and I’m eager to get some more practice in!

Projections are Hard, M’Kay?

I was too lazy to make my own coffee this morning (I know, I know…how hard is it to grind some beans and add hot water?), so I stopped off at the nearest coffee shop for a latte. While waiting for my drink, I read some newspaper clippings that were taped on the wall near the pick-up counter. My horoscope cracked me up.

Aquarius (Jan. 20-Feb. 18): Today is an 8 — Some costs are higher than expected. Other things you’ll get on sale for unbelievable discounts. It’s hard to make projections. Do the best you can and make corrections as you go along.

It’s hard to make projections? Seriously? Isn’t that the whole point of horoscopes? Also, I suspect the author, Ms. Linda Black, graduated from tautology school. On the surface it could sound clever to say some things are going to be expensive and some things are going to be cheap, but really it’s just a ridiculously obvious truism.

I was hoping for hints about romance, adventure and great wealth, but have to admit, this horoscope supplied plenty of amusement for one morning.

Knitting Knews:

I don’t think I’ve mentioned it on my blog, but I’m knitting the fair-isle yoke sweater from Elizabeth Zimmerman’s Opinionated Knitter. I was inspired by Jessica’s and Sharon’s beautiful renditions. My version is going to be in clownish colors, since my stash seems to be overflowing with really bright yarns, but I’ve decided that’s a good thing. We Pacific Northwesterners have to cope with a lot of gray skies and a dose of happy color is good for the soul.

I’ve knit the body and am halfway up the second sleeve. It’s working up very quickly! Soon, I’ll get to do the fun multi-colored yoke. I can hardly wait.
