My Specialty: Changing Horses in Mid-Stream

I’m going to have to re-think the birthday dress idea. You see, it looks just a little too much like a hospital gown for me to feel excited about wearing it.

Well, okay, it’s not quite as bad as a hospital gown. It zips up completely in the back. No worries, though. I’ll most likely refashion it into a simple skirt and call it good.

Black Bean Soup

I have spent years and years looking for a good black bean soup recipe. I’m sure there are lots of them out there, but until yesterday, I hadn’t found one that particularly excited me. When I first tasted this soup, I was tempted to plunge my entire head into the stock pot and start slurping. Yes, it was that good.

I restrained myself, and managed to save some for my famished husband. He liked the soup too, but has never been a big fan of ham, so wasn’t quite as enthusiastic about it as I was. Next time, I’ll try bacon. Robert contends that everything tastes better with bacon.

Deprivation and Self-Indulgence

I failed. Utterly. I could not, for the life of me, sleep one wink last night. So, I’m sitting here, feeling wretched and grumpy and not very excited about anything I’m doing right now. I should just go back to bed, but the sun is shining. The sun…is…shining… Keeping in mind that sunshine is a rare commodity in Seattle at this time of year, you’ll most likely understand how desperate I am to not miss a single minute of it–thus, I’m staying awake, even if it kills me. Hopefully it won’t come to that.

I was much more productive yesterday. I started working on the sleeve for the cardigan that was supposed to be a birthday present to myself. It’s knitting up quickly, but not quickly enough for me to wear on my birthday. I just can’t do two sleeves, a hood and a whole lot of finishing in seven days. Maybe it will be done in time for Valentine’s. That would be nice!

Since the knitting wasn’t speeding along fast enough for me, I decided to sew myself a birthday present.

Dress Making

This is destined to be a pretty A-lined dress (Vogue V8468). If it turns out nice, I’d like to wear it to my brother-in-law’s 30th birthday party that’s coming up in February. And hey, husband dear, if you’re reading this, I could also wear it out to a nice restaurant. Hint, hint!
