Tale of 2 Sweaters (and a Hat)

Published by Amy at 1:12 am under Knitting

Thank you for all your kind responses to my post about Robert’s heart problems. He’s had a second spell, but didn’t think it lasted long enough to merit a trip to the emergency room again. Both of us are anxious for him to see his doctors this week and hope they can shed some light on what’s causing the problem and how it can be treated.

It’s time to move onto more cheerful subjects. (Be forewarned, there are a lot of photos in this entry.)

My parents decided to drive over Saturday instead of Sunday because they heard reports that the weather on the mountain passes was going to get worse as the weekend progressed. That meant I had to hurry up and finish the hat I was knitting for my dad. Let me just state for the record that I should never undertake to knit something which involves techniques that are new to me when there?s a looming deadline. Also, I should be forced to put down my projects when I?m particularly stressed out about something (Robert?s health). Because I failed to heed common sense, I had no end of troubles knitting up this fairly simple hat. For instance, I totally ignored the instruction to turn the hat inside out once I finished with the brim and knit on the ?wrong side.? Consequently, when you fold up the brim, the wrong side of the cabled pattern shows. There wasn?t enough time to fix the heinous mistake, so I just gave it to him as-is. Luckily, having lived with my mother for so long, he has been well-trained to receive handmade gifts with a lot of grace!

My mom brought the sweater she had repaired for me. Here?s an incredibly poor photo of it:

I?ll try to take a better picture of it next weekend when I?m at home during the daylight hours. I think I did a pretty good job on my first cabled project, but there were a couple of problems with it. (1) What was I thinking when I chose to knit it in the size I did? It?s roomy even on my six-month pregnant body. Unfortunately, it?s not very flattering as a maternity top, so I doubt I?ll have any photos taken of me in it. (2) I wish I hadn?t substituted a different yarn for this project instead of the Rowan kid silk it called for. The yarn I used, while nice, doesn?t drape as nicely as the Rowan does, nor does it looks as soft and fluffy.

Regardless of these ?mistakes,? I?m proud of this. It?s my first adult-sized sweater after all!

I finished something else this weekend as well:

Isn’t it cute? It turned out much better than I expected it to. (I’m not an optimist by nature.) I still have to pick out some buttons for it. I think some novelty buttons (duckies, hearts flowers) might be really cute or I might look for something plainer but which contrasts with the yarn. We’ll have to see what the store has in stock smile I’m also planning on trying to knit the matching hat and booties. I only have one skein of yarn left, though, so I’m not sure if it will be enough. It can’t hurt to try, though.

I’ve also managed to finish quite a bit on my second Regia sock:

So far, they seem to be matching up pretty well, but I fear the true test will come when I turn the heel.

I’ve almost finished everything on my “current projects” list. I’m already dreaming up what my next projects will be!

In addition to knitting and chatting with my parents, I did quite a bit of cooking this weekend. Sam and I baked some gingerbread cookies. He was a great help and loved to use the flour sifter:

I’m sure you all wish you had a sous chef like mine smile
