Bon Voyage

Sam and I saw Robert off on his trip to the midwest where he’ll attend a friend’s wedding. We all originally intended to go, but plane tickets were outrageously expensive. We could have taken a trip to Europe for less. Unbelievable.

Sam was inconsolable as he watched his father pack for the trip. He really seemed to know what was going on this time. In the past, he?s enjoyed similar moments since they were opportunities for him to climb into suitcases, to run off with a favorite tie or pair of socks and to generally get in the way and wreak havoc. Not this time. He knew his daddy was going away and he wasn?t happy about it.

As we watched Robert board the bus later on, Sam became hysterical. He reached out towards the parked vehicle and sobbed, ?daddy, daddy.? To hear him so distraught broke my heart. We watched the bus drive off and then I packed him in the car and drove home.

Later that night, we were sitting in bed reading the ?uh oh? book (a Clifford the big red dog book?Sam exclaims ?uh oh? every time Clifford appears), when Sam sat upright, looked out the bedroom door and called ?daddy!? Perhaps he thought his daddy was in the other room and was going to come in to kiss him good night. I?m not certain.

The next few days are going to be difficult if he remains this upset. Poor little boy.

Oh! I almost forgot to mention something I’m very excited about. I’m going to be having lunch with Alicia and her beautiful little girl, Ashleigh, today!
