Life is Good

Uncategorized October 7th, 2002

Talk about extremes. I did nothing but whine and complain during the past few weeks (Who can blame me, really? I was ill for nearly a month) and now I couldn’t be happier. The piano, of course, is a major factor in my newfound happiness (nothing like retail therapy to cure a girl of her blues! heh heh), but a couple of other events have also contributed to it. What a lucky girl I am!

WE BOUGHT A PIANO!!! Woo hoo!

When I mentioned the other day that we were going to get a piano, I only expected to rent one. It turns out that the monthly payments for renting and buying were the same, and in the long run, it’s significantly cheaper to just buy the darn thing. Plus, the pianos available for renting were nowhere near as nice as those for buying.

I chose an old Acrosonic, which is made by Baldwin–the very same company who built my parents’ lovely old baby grand. It’s not in terrific shape. There are some dings in the wood finish and one of the keys is chipped, but the action is still good and the sound is FANTASTIC. Not too bright like the Asian pianos and not to “noisy” like the Kimball I tested out. (FYI-Asian pianos are built with metal alloys and plastics–which brighten the sound, i.e. diminish the resonance. The old European style are built with wood only–which create the warm resonance I love.) Baldwins have a rich warm sound that appeals to me.

I’m ecstatic! Really out of my mind with glee. This has been a dream of mine for years, but I never thought I’d be able to do it. I can hardly wait until Tuesday when it will be delivered! Yay! Time to find the sheet music and dust off the metronome!
