Open House

After most of the week spent offline, you’d think I’d feel a lot better. Unfortunately, whatever bug I came down with, my whole family came down with it too and we’re a real sorry, sniffling, sneezing, achy-headed bunch. Waah.

Enough with the self-pity. I have happier things to discuss!

Last night, we attended the open house at Sam’s Daycare. It was a really positive experience. Since he’s moving into a different program now that he’s a big boy and walking, we weren’t familiar with the teachers or the activities in which he would be involved. All his teachers seem very nice! He seems to like them too. They say he’s doing a great job transitioning into this new environment. He’s curious about all the new things and spends most of his day exploring.

One thing I like about the daycare is they use an innovative curriculum. Each week is devoted to a specific theme around which they plan their activities. This week’s theme was “apples, bananas and oranges.” They sing songs about the fruit, talk about and experiment with the fruit’s different textures, discuss the colors, use apples like stamps in their art projects, etc. It sounds like so much fun! I wish I could be there and take part in those activities!

Sam has a special cubby where he keeps his stuff. He also has a file where we can pick up his art projects. Imagine that. My little boy is creating art projects! I knew he could color (he does an especially nice job coloring on the coffee table rather than on paper), but I didn’t know he could make apple prints and all the other creative things they’re doing.

Also, Sam gets to play outside a couple of times during the day. They have some fun toys for him to climb on and ride on. There’s also a “water table,” which they fill up with water and allow the kids to splash around in. He grooves on that!

A singer/guitar player provided the entertainment at the open house. Kids gathered around him in a semi-circle to hear the fun songs he was singing. When we walked into the room where this was taking place, Sam let go of my hand and took off. He made his way into the center of the circle, and stood there, mesmerised by what he saw and heard. He stared really intently at the musician. If I had been the guy playing the guitar, I would have had a heck of a time concentrating with someone looking at me like that.

At one point, Sam began bobbing up and down to the music, which is his style of dancing. It was so cute! Everyone laughed good-naturedly at Sam. The directors took quite a few photos of him–I hope she gives one to us smile
