one month old

I can’t believe an entire month has passed since Sam was born. He’s done a lot of growing and changing since those first couple of days. He now weighs 8 lbs. 6 ozs. and measures 21-1/4 inches long. All the breastfeeding seems to have paid off!

He’s become a lot more alert. When I play music on the stereo, he immediately stops whatever he’s doing and listens intently. Mozart and Haydn symphonies especially seem to captivate him. We’ve also tried playing some of our favorite popular music, everything from They Might be Giants & the Lemonheads to Paul Simon & REM. For some reason, these don’t interest him as much. I’ll leave it to the developmental scientists to determine why. It’s a good thing I love the classics grin

I don’t know if it’s just wishful thinking on my part, but he seems to have started smiling responsively. When Robert and I speak to him in squeaky voices and make a lot of goofy faces at him, he graces us with an adorable grin. That makes all of the late night crying jags instantaneously fade from memory.
