It’s a beautiful day here today. The sun is shining brightly and there’s a pleasant breeze keeping things cool. It sure didn’t make going to work any easier. Luckily, I got off a bit early in order to go to the escrow agency where we signed our closing documents. Once that was done, I was free to enjoy the weather!

We were there for only a short period of time, but the visit left us emotionally drained. Afterwards, Robert and I held one another. I cried. Robert was silent in that way men have when they are coping with something difficult. Where did we go that caused us to react this way? The childcare center where we would be leaving our baby.

It’s not a bad place. In fact, it’s very clean and decorated pleasantly. The staff seemed highly capable and the children well looked after. Parents were even encouraged to bring in their child’s special blanket or a mobile to hang over the crib. So, what was so disturbing about it? Nothing more (or less) than the fact that we would be leaving our child there. No longer would I be able to keep him with me at all times. We would have to part. This realization led to another: being pregnant–carrying a child–is a blessed state, one enjoyed for only a short period of time.

I’ve experienced two extremes of human nature today: selfishness and generosity. Some of the calls I had to take today at work left me fuming. I don’t know where people get the idea that they deserve special treatment–but when they are treated just like everyone else, they throw the ugliest temper tantrums. One caller shouted insulting names at me and then hung up. Anyway, the less said about selfishness the better.

What I’d rather focus on is the generosity I’ve experienced in gestures both large and small, all of which are deeply touching. First, my in-laws sent me a sweet Mother’s Day card. My very first one. I still haven’t begun to think of myself as a mom, but receiving the card made me feel special . Second, Robert surprised me by stocking the freezer and cupboards with all my favorite foods. We now have enough snacks and meals to satisfy my cravings for at least a week. Third, I received a totally unexpected package from Amazon.com today. A thoughtful gentleman from Northern Ireland splurged and bought a cute book for my baby. Thank you JayWizz! And fourth, my parents (the excited grandparents-to-be) bought this gorgeous crib for us. I feel positively spoiled.
